Every year, security vendors publish a bot-traffic share figure, and every year it lands somewhere near half of all web traffic. The number is directionally honest and practically useless for a store operator. What matters is your share, on your pages, in your funnel.

Why the aggregate numbers mislead

Bot pressure is not evenly distributed. Stores with scarce or resellable inventory - sneakers, consoles, concert-adjacent merch - attract inventory-hoarding bots at rates far above average. Stores with heavy content and thin margins attract scrapers. A commodity-goods store may see a fraction of the headline figure while a hype-drop brand sees multiples of it.

The three bot categories that matter to a store

Scrapers copy your catalog, pricing, and images. They rarely convert and they inflate every traffic metric you report. Transaction bots buy limited inventory faster than humans can, then flip it. Fake-engagement bots click ads, view pages, and bounce - polluting attribution and burning retargeting budgets. Each has a different signature and a different fix.

How bots corrupt your numbers

The quiet cost is not bandwidth - it is measurement. If bot sessions reach your analytics, your conversion rate is understated (bots never buy), your retargeting pools are poisoned (bots get cookied and re-marketed), and A/B test results can skew. Stores that filter bot traffic at the edge routinely discover their human-only conversion rate is meaningfully higher than the reported blended figure.

Measuring your real share

Start with what you can see: data-center IP ranges, headless-browser fingerprints, impossible session velocities, and user-agent anomalies catch the crude half. The sophisticated half - residential proxies, browser automation with human-like timing - needs behavioral detection or a purpose-built edge layer. The honest answer to 'how much bot traffic do we have' is a range with a method attached, not a point estimate from a report.
